Stamp Duty Scrapped for First Home Buyers.

In a major win for first-time buyers, the Queensland Government has announced that from 1 May 2025, stamp duty (transfer duty) will be completely removed for first home buyers purchasing a new home, no matter the price.

Previously, first home buyers purchasing vacant land would start paying stamp duty on a block worth more than $350,000. With these changes, First Home buyers who purchase land at (for example) $400,00, could now save $5,300 in stamp duty.

Stamp duty has long been one of the biggest upfront costs stopping many young buyers from purchasing their first home — and this change is set to remove a major barrier.

$30K First Home Owner Grant Still Available.

Alongside the stamp duty concession, first home buyers may also be eligible for the $30,000 First Home Owner Grant — available for new homes valued under $750,000. This grant was doubled in November 2023 to help more Queenslanders enter the market, but it is only available for contracts signed before 30 June 2025. After this date, the grant is expected to return to $15,000.
To be eligible, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
    Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or applying with someone who is).
  • Not have previously owned residential property in Australia that you lived in.
  • Be buying or building a new home.
  • Ensure the total value (including land and upgrades) is under $750,000.
